BBL (Brazilian Butt Lift) is a body contouring procedure performed by harvesting fat with liposuction from areas such as the abdomen, waist, back, or thighs, preparing it, and transferring it to the buttocks. The aim is not only to increase buttock volume, but also to improve the waist-to-hip transition, balance body proportions, and create a contour that is appropriate for the individual’s anatomy. For international patients planning BBL in Turkey, suitable patient selection, safe surgical technique, an authorised healthcare facility, and a follow-up plan that includes returning home should all be considered together.

How Is BBL Surgery Performed?

In the first stage of surgery, the areas from which fat will be harvested are determined. Fat tissue removed through liposuction is prepared using appropriate methods and transferred to the planned areas of the buttocks. How much fat can be removed from each area and how much volume can be added to the buttocks depend on the patient’s fat distribution, skin quality, pelvic structure, and overall body proportions.

BBL should not be regarded as a standard buttock augmentation procedure. In some patients, the main goal may be to increase volume, while in others, shaping the waist, balancing hip dips, or reducing asymmetry may be more important. For this reason, it is not possible to reproduce exactly the appearance seen in another patient’s photograph. Buttock contouring should be planned individually according to the person’s anatomy and expectations.

Who May Be a Suitable Candidate for BBL?

Suitable candidates for BBL should be in generally good health for surgery, have relatively stable body weight, and have realistic expectations. Sufficient fat tissue must be available in suitable areas of the body for fat transfer. Individuals with very low body fat may not have enough donor tissue to achieve the desired volume.

Skin quality also affects planning. If there is significant sagging in the buttocks or surrounding tissues, fat transfer alone may not be sufficient. Surgery may be postponed or a different approach may be recommended for individuals planning major weight changes, those with uncontrolled medical conditions, or those who are unable to follow postoperative instructions.

Smoking and nicotine use should always be disclosed to the surgeon because they may negatively affect wound healing and tissue circulation. When nicotine should be stopped and how long it should be avoided are determined according to the surgeon’s assessment.

Is BBL a Safe Operation?

BBL is an operation that requires strict adherence to safety protocols. One of the most serious risks is fat embolism, which may occur if fat is injected into the wrong anatomical plane. A joint safety statement from international plastic surgery organisations supports keeping fat within the superficial tissue above the muscle and monitoring the position of the cannula with real-time ultrasound during injection.

Ultrasound helps the surgeon visualise the cannula tip and the anatomical plane into which the fat is being injected. However, the use of ultrasound alone does not guarantee safety. The surgeon’s knowledge of gluteal anatomy, experience, patient selection, management of operating time, and performance of the procedure in a hospital with appropriate facilities are all important.

How Does the BBL Process Begin in Turkey?

For international patients, the process generally begins with a preliminary assessment based on medical history, existing health conditions, medications, previous operations, and body photographs. This stage does not mean that the operation has been definitively approved. The final decision should be made after an in-person examination and the necessary tests once the patient arrives in Turkey.

Patients should investigate the surgeon’s plastic surgery qualifications, the hospital where the procedure will be performed, and the medical tourism organisation involved. The Republic of Turkey Ministry of Health publishes lists of healthcare facilities and intermediary organisations authorised to provide international health tourism services.

How Are the Operation and Length of Stay in Turkey Planned?

Before surgery, blood tests, an anaesthesia assessment, and any other investigations considered necessary are performed. During the examination, the surgeon assesses the areas from which fat will be harvested, the shape of the buttocks, existing asymmetries, and the amount of fat that can be transferred safely. The plan discussed during the initial online consultation may change after the physical examination.

The length of stay in Turkey should be determined according to the extent of surgery and the patient’s recovery rather than a fixed package schedule. Being discharged from hospital does not mean that the patient is ready for a long-haul flight. Follow-up appointments should be completed, mobility should be adequate, and the surgeon should approve flying before the patient returns home.

How Does Recovery Progress After BBL?

After surgery, swelling, bruising, tenderness, and tightness may occur in the areas treated with liposuction. Special compression garments may be used to support these areas. Direct pressure on the buttocks may need to be limited, and sitting and sleeping positions may need to be adjusted. The duration of these instructions varies according to the surgical technique and the patient’s recovery.

Short, regular walks may be recommended during the early period to support circulation; however, strenuous exercise, intense activity, and prolonged immobility should be avoided. Because not all of the transferred fat will remain permanently, the volume seen during the first few weeks does not represent the final result. The body contour can be assessed more accurately as swelling decreases and the tissues heal.

How Does Follow-Up Continue After Returning Home?

Before surgery, international patients should know whom they will contact after returning home, how online follow-up appointments will be conducted, and which healthcare facility they should attend if an unexpected problem occurs. The return flight should not be scheduled solely according to ticket prices or personal convenience.

Symptoms such as sudden shortness of breath, chest pain, or unusual heartbeats require urgent medical assessment. Before discharge, patients should be informed about the difference between expected postoperative changes and symptoms that require emergency attention.

BBL Planning Should Be Based on Body Proportions and Safety

When planning BBL surgery in Turkey, focusing only on the desired buttock volume is not sufficient. The patient’s anatomy, availability of adequate donor fat, general health, the surgeon’s experience, ultrasound-guided superficial fat injection, and the postoperative follow-up plan should all be assessed together.

Appropriate planning aims to create a waist-to-hip balance that suits the individual’s existing anatomy rather than imitating another person’s body. The final decision regarding surgery and the travel schedule should be confirmed through an in-person examination and medical assessment following the preliminary remote consultation.
