A Mommy Makeover is a personalised surgical plan that addresses changes in the abdomen, breasts, waist, and other areas of the body after pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding. It is not the name of a single operation. Procedures such as tummy tuck, liposuction, breast lift, breast augmentation, or breast reduction may be combined according to the patient’s needs.
Not every Mommy Makeover includes the same procedures. The operations to be performed are determined by assessing excess skin, the condition of the abdominal muscles, breast volume, body weight, general health, and the individual’s expectations.
What Changes Can Pregnancy Cause in the Body?
During pregnancy, the abdominal skin and abdominal wall expand to accommodate the growing uterus. Even after weight loss following childbirth, the skin may not fully retract. The connective tissue between the abdominal muscles may stretch, leading to muscle separation known as rectus diastasis.
Breast volume may increase during pregnancy and breastfeeding. After breastfeeding is completed, breast tissue may decrease in volume, upper breast fullness may be reduced, and the nipples may sit in a lower position.
Fat distribution around the waist, back, buttocks, and thighs may also change. Nutrition and exercise may reduce fat in these areas, but they cannot always correct significant excess skin, breast sagging, or separation of the abdominal muscles.
Which Procedures Can a Mommy Makeover Include?
The procedures included in a Mommy Makeover are selected according to the individual’s anatomy. The same combination does not need to be performed for every patient.
Tummy Tuck
A tummy tuck is performed to remove excess skin from the lower abdomen and surrounding areas. When necessary, separated abdominal muscles may be brought closer together along the midline.
A tummy tuck is not a weight-loss operation. Its primary aim is to address excess skin and abdominal wall laxity remaining after pregnancy or weight changes.
Liposuction
Liposuction may be used to reduce localised fat deposits in areas such as the abdomen, waist, back, buttocks, or thighs and to shape the transitions between body areas.
Liposuction does not remove loose skin. If excess skin is significant, it may need to be planned together with a tummy tuck or another lifting procedure.
Breast Lift
If breast volume remains sufficient after pregnancy and breastfeeding but the nipples have descended or the skin has become loose, a breast lift may be considered.
During the operation, excess skin is removed, the breast tissue is reshaped, and the nipple is repositioned to a more appropriate level.
Breast Lift with Implants
If breast sagging is accompanied by a significant loss of upper breast fullness, an implant may be added to the breast lift procedure.
Implants are not necessary for every patient. The decision is made by assessing chest width, existing breast tissue, skin quality, and the desired volume.
Breast Augmentation
If there is loss of breast volume without significant sagging, breast augmentation alone may be sufficient. Volume may be increased with an implant or, in suitable patients, with fat transfer.
Breast Reduction
If the breasts become large, heavy, and sagging after pregnancy, breast reduction may be performed together with a lift. The aim is to remove excess breast tissue and skin and create breasts that are more proportionate to the body.
Who May Be Suitable for a Mommy Makeover?
A Mommy Makeover may be considered for individuals who have completed pregnancy and breastfeeding, have a relatively stable body weight, and are in suitable general health for surgery.
Suitable candidates may have concerns such as excess abdominal skin that cannot be improved through exercise, separation of the abdominal muscles, breast sagging, loss or increase of breast volume, and localised fat deposits around the waist.
It is also important for expectations to be realistic. A Mommy Makeover does not recreate the pre-pregnancy body exactly. Its aim is to address areas of concern within the individual’s current anatomy and create a more balanced body contour.
When Is the Right Time for a Mommy Makeover?
Surgery is generally planned after breastfeeding has been completed, hormone levels have stabilised, and body weight has become stable.
If another pregnancy is being considered in the near future, postponing surgery may be more appropriate. A new pregnancy may change the abdominal skin, abdominal muscles, and breast tissue again.
Being close to the target weight is also important. Significant weight loss after surgery may create new areas of skin laxity, while weight gain may stretch the tissues again.
Can All Procedures Be Performed at the Same Time?
It may be possible to perform several aesthetic procedures during the same surgical session, but this is not safe for every patient.
The total duration of surgery, the extent of the planned procedures, the patient’s health status, the possibility of blood loss, and the overall recovery burden are considered when making this decision. Performing more procedures at the same time is not always more advantageous.
In some patients, abdominal and breast procedures may be planned during the same session, while more extensive combinations may need to be divided into separate stages.
How Should the Recovery Process Be Planned?
Recovery time depends on the procedures performed. After a tummy tuck, patients may have difficulty standing fully upright and may experience limited mobility during the first few days. After breast surgery, movements that strain the arms and heavy lifting should be avoided.
When several areas are operated on at the same time, arranging support for childcare, household tasks, and daily needs becomes particularly important. Swelling may take several months to decrease, and the tissues may require time to settle.
The aim of Mommy Makeover planning is not to perform as many procedures as possible at the same time, but to create a plan that is appropriate for the individual’s anatomy, health status, and safe surgical limits. The procedures that are necessary should be determined individually after a detailed physical examination.
